Welcome to the Learning Lab. Our goal for the Learning Lab is to help students with diverse learning needs, achieve their educational goals. We service students who need accommodations due to medical circumstances, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Cognitive Disabilities, other Health Impairments and/or are academically struggling in their classes as determined by the Guidance Department.
Melbourne Central Catholic High School recognizes that students must be encountered as persons possessing individual needs and abilities. Teaching as Jesus did, and imitating Him in reaching out to those with special needs, MCC attempts to respond to students with learning conflicts. Academic support is offered through the school’s Learning Lab program. The Child Study Team, involving input from teachers, counselors, administrators, and the learning specialist, determines student eligibility for the services. The goals include providing assistance with coursework, teaching essential learning strategies, and working cooperatively with educators and support personnel to assist students in meeting their goals. Accommodations in the mainstream setting are outlined and agreed upon by student, teacher, parents, and Child Study Team.
The Learning Lab coordinates meetings with students who are serviced with education plans and 504 plans. In addition to coordinating these meetings, we facilitate distributing and implementing student’s accommodations within his/her classroom. We also work closely with the Guidance Department in order to assist with proper course placement for students with diverse learning needs. In addition, the Learning Lab coordinates efforts with teachers to assist in implementing interventions to help students become more successful in the classroom. Through the Learning Lab, the students monitor their grades and assignments on netclassroom and a plan is devised to improve grades when needed.
Mrs. Coral Carrick is certified in Specific Learning Disabilities and/or Exceptional Student Education with numerous years of service in both the private and public school setting in Brevard County. The Learning Lab provides testing accommodations during the school day, exam week, and for standardized tests to all students who are approved by the Guidance Department based on their paperwork. College Board and ACT Board are the only organizations that can approve accommodations for standardized tests. Students who are enrolled in the School Development Course are part of the Learning Lab and receive elective credit. The School Development Course is a taught in a Resource Room type format, as all students are working individually and receive help on an individual basis. This course is designed to provide support to students with learning conflicts. Students may take the School Development Course for a semester or may need the support of a resource room all four years. The Learning Specialists also meet on a consultative basis at least monthly with Brevard County ESE Teacher to Private Schools to monitor progress of students with educational plans.
Melbourne Central Catholic high school is a college preparatory high school; therefore, all students are instructed within inclusion classrooms and students are expected to complete the Diploma requirements. The curriculum at MCC High School is rigorous; however, students with diverse learning needs are able to be successful due to the support from the Learning Lab, our Guidance Department, and the continuous efforts of the teachers. Students with diverse learning needs will graduate and have gone on to be successful at college and the work force. We strive to assist students with diverse learning needs so that they may be able to successfully continue their education in a field of their choice.
